The Christian Science Monitor has an article about teachers striking back against student online activities. Cyberbullying has received a lot of attention recently, but most of it has focused on student-student incidents. Not only are students attacking each other, many are creating online content about school teachers and administrators.
Some of the victims have fought back in court with law suites. What may have started out as a joke by a creative student can have the potential of costing that student’s family a lot of money.
Here’s the bottom line. Before you publish it, consider how long it’s going to be out there. Sites like the Way Back Machine can keep a permanent record of your “joke” for all your future friends, employers and children to see.
Use some common sense before you press the “publish” button.

Pingback: Education » Use Common Sense
I am a student at Grand Valley State University and in my computers in education class we have just had a similar discussion. We were not only discussing the fact that schools are going after students for their actions but also giving our opinion on the situation.
My personal opinion is that these students should eventually start to catch on after so many others have gotten in trouble for their actions online. One of the big things out there now is the students posting underage pictures of themselves drinking on sites such as “facebook” and “myspace”. Then parents as well as school administrators and even law enforcement are finding these and taking action against students.
The students complain about it being a privacy violation and all that jazz but in the end you have to look at it simply like this, once something is posted on the internet is no longer private material. This is why it is called the WORLD WIDE WEB. It is now available to the world and they may do with it how they please even if that means punishing the little 15 year old who posts pictures of himself chugging a bud light and throwing up a middle finger. Apparently this 15 year old is an adult now and wants everyone to know. Well guess what now everyone does know because you posted those pictures online, so you got your wish.. now deal with the consequence. Final note, once it is out there, it is out there for good.
