There is a sliver of truth to what rajan said. It's widely accepted that people who are involved in linux have a desire to learn more about linux and how they can someday add to the whole community. I think what rajan was overlooking is the fact that some of the issues are not an easy fix even for seasoned linux users. So to paint this picture where users of linux live in a world where all of their computer woes are solved by hand coding up a quick script is near fantasy.

Case and point: I just spent 4 hours on the ubuntu IRC with a guy who has been a linux guy for 11 years. Couldn't figure out how to get my 30" dell monitor to display a resolution over 1280x800.Tried LITERALLY everything in the book. Yes the guy was more than gracious in helping me, I couldn't believe how kind he was. And throughout the time I was in there there were countless people practically begging for answers and then just dropping right out of the channel.

Bottom line, I wasted his time and mine, didn't get a solution and I'm left with a 30" monitor that looks like I'm stuck in a lost world of Mario Bros. I'd take windows xp any day, and I'm a mac guy through and through.

There is a time to learn and a time to get some work done. In my opinion, the learning curve is too steep when simple, common tasks can't be completed without the aid of the Terminal and no GUI. That's my 2 cents, can you tell I've had enough? :-)

if you're not interested in learning, then linux is not right for you. if you are interested in making a system completely yours and not having to rely on other to write proper code, then linux is for you. if i have a problem with any of my linux boxes, i can usually figure out how to solve them (with lots of help from the ubuntuforums.org people). there's nothing wrong with MS windows if you don't mind having errors that you sometimes can't fix.
