{"id":244,"date":"2007-06-04T21:09:05","date_gmt":"2007-06-05T02:09:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.trustyetc.com\/trustyblog\/2007\/06\/04\/efficiency-tip-41-folders\/"},"modified":"2015-05-14T09:14:19","modified_gmt":"2015-05-14T14:14:19","slug":"efficiency-tip-41-folders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.trustyetc.com\/trustyblog\/2007\/06\/04\/efficiency-tip-41-folders\/","title":{"rendered":"Efficiency Tip #41 &#8211; Folders"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" align=\"right\" src=\"http:\/\/www.trustyetc.com\/trustyblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/06\/folderlayout.png\" alt=\"folderlayout.png\" title=\"folderlayout.png\" \/>I mentioned this when I talked about <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.trustyetc.com\/trustyblog\/2007\/03\/21\/the-folder\/\">pictures<\/a>, but it goes for all content.\u00a0 Use folders to organize your files and do it in a logical way.\u00a0 This is the single most important technical skill anyone can master and it is easy to learn.<\/p>\n<p>I keep everything I create in the My Documents folder.\u00a0 This makes backup simple; I only have to copy one folder to my backup drive.\u00a0 I have generic folders for most things &#8211; music &#8211; pictures &#8211; taxes.\u00a0 Inside these folders are more folders that separate content into more specific categories: Taxes\/2007, Taxes\/2006, Taxes\/2005, and even\u00a0Taxes\/2007\/Receipts.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>My\u00a0folder rule is simple.\u00a0 Every project gets a folder and all the files for the project go in the folder.\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The graphic to the right shows my &#8220;courses&#8221; folder structure.\u00a0 Each semester I create folders with the course numbers I teach.\u00a0 The previous semester&#8217;s folders are copied into a &#8220;semester&#8221; folder and then moved to the &#8220;archive&#8221; folder.\u00a0 The &#8220;semester&#8221; folder has a name\u00a0in the form\u00a0&#8220;2007 Spring&#8221;.\u00a0 By organizing files in this manner I can easily grab work from any student by knowing the year and semester the student participated in a specific course.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One other important tip.\u00a0 Notice the top folder in the graphic is named &#8220;~UF Courses&#8221; instead of &#8220;UF Courses&#8221;.\u00a0 There are two folders I use multiple times each day.\u00a0 I want those two folders at the top of the My Documents list for quick access.\u00a0 I prefixed their names with the Tilda so those folders are always alphabetically first.<\/p>\n<p>You may think this &#8220;folder organization&#8221; is overkill.\u00a0 I cannot disagree more.\u00a0 Right now I have more than 159,000 files in My Documents dating all the way back to 1993.\u00a0 If it were not for folders it would be complete chaos.
