Do you use the “Christopher Columbus Method” of typing?\u00a0 That’s the\u00a0“find your key and land on it” method.\u00a0 The Ohio Department of Education<\/a> says you should learn\u00a0to touch-type\u00a0in third grade (check the bottom of page 90).\u00a0<\/p>\n

I learned to type in graduate school.\u00a0 You are probably guessing that I didn’t take\u00a0Typing 501.\u00a0 You’re right.\u00a0 I was trying to communicate with people via the computer.\u00a0 One day I realized that I was wasting a lot of time “looking” at the keys and then looking up to see my mistakes.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This was long before the days of Mavis Beacon<\/a>, or at least my knowledge of typing software.\u00a0 Besides, I was a graduate student.\u00a0 That translates into “poor” and there wasn’t a lot of open source free software to use either.<\/p>\n

One day I decided I was no longer going to look at the keys.\u00a0 That lasted about a minute.\u00a0 Fortunately I had an IBM keyboard with removable keys.\u00a0 I took them all off and rearranged them.\u00a0 Looking at the keys no longer helped.\u00a0 That’s when I learned to touch-type.<\/p>\n

Today, I can type about 35 words a minute.\u00a0 That isn’t bad for an old guy that never took a formal typing class.\u00a0 Now my eyes are free to watch for those misspelled words.\u00a0 Unfortunately, learning to type did not improve my spelling.<\/p>\n
