height: 240px\" \/>Yesterday I talked about using del.icio.us for bookmarks.\u00a0 I talked about a &#8220;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.trustyetc.com\/trustyblog\/2007\/05\/27\/efficiency-tip-34-start-page\/\">start page<\/a>&#8221; a few months ago.\u00a0\u00a0The start page is\u00a0one extra step you can take to improve not just your bookmarks, but almost everything you do on the Internet.\u00a0 Create a &#8220;start page&#8221; with items you look at often.\u00a0 I use Protopage.\u00a0 Here is a Protopage I made just for this post.\u00a0 It took five minutes to create and setup.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.protopage.com\/trustyblog\">http:\/\/www.protopage.com\/trustyblog<\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are three main parts to this page.<\/p>\n<p>1 &#8211; News<br \/>\n2 &#8211; Pictures<br \/>\n3 &#8211; Links<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" align=\"right\" width=\"128\" src=\"http:\/\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/25\/44439550_3193af3b7e_o.jpg\" height=\"55\" style=\"width: 128px; height: 55px\" \/>The first two items are driven by what is called <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rss\">RSS<\/a>.\u00a0 These are &#8220;feeds&#8221; from other sites that are dynamically created just for me.\u00a0 Protopage acts as a news agent for me.\u00a0 When I subscribed to &#8220;Alvin&#8217;s Educational Technology Blog&#8221;, I\u00a0told Protopage&#8217;s RSS component to continually monitor\u00a0that specific site on the Internet and report back any new stories.<\/p>\n<p>You don&#8217;t have to use Protopage for your RSS subscriptions.\u00a0 RSS is built into Internet Explorer and Firefox.\u00a0 You can also setup a (free) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.trustyetc.com\/trustyblog\/2007\/05\/03\/google-reader\/\">Google Reader<\/a> account.<\/p>\n<p>The beauty of RSS is that I can subscribe to many different sites &#8211; news, pictures, comics,\u00a0del.icio.us bookmarks\u00a0&#8211; and have all that\u00a0information come to me on one page.\u00a0 I can glance at my one page and see if there are any new stores without visiting all those different web sites.\u00a0 Did you catch that reference to del.icio.us?\u00a0 If I know your del.icio.us username, I can subscribe to your bookmarks.\u00a0 Any time you add a new bookmark, my RSS reader tells me.<\/p>\n<p>Check out the Dilbert comic on the Protopage.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.protopage.com\/trustyblog\">http:\/\/www.protopage.com\/trustyblog<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Today it is today&#8217;s comic strip.\u00a0 Tomorrow it will be tomorrow&#8217;s strip.\u00a0 Next Thursday it will be next Thursday&#8217;s strip.\u00a0 All this happens automatically using RSS.<\/p>\n<p>I subscribe to about fifty different feeds.\u00a0 I can easily scroll through all those multiple times every day.\u00a0 If I had fifty bookmarks and had to visit the sites interactively, it would take hours to go through all fifty just once.\u00a0 I would have to sift through advertisement banners and other distractions.\u00a0 Often I would click\u00a0a link to find out nothing new is posted on the site.\u00a0 RSS is one of the biggest time savers on the Internet.\u00a0 Period.<\/p>\n<p>TSPY=5.93<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday I talked about using del.icio.us for bookmarks.\u00a0 I talked about a &#8220;start page&#8221;
