height: 239px\" \/>I have eased into Vista over the last couple of months.\u00a0 I had too many critical programs on my old system to risk an upgrade.\u00a0 I\u00a0had my data backed up, but I could not\u00a0risk the chance\u00a0of some of my applications would not be able to handle the upgrade.<\/p>\n<p>I did a fresh install on a machine with 2 GB of RAM.\u00a0 I moved my good video card over with both of my monitors.\u00a0 So far I have had very few problems, but there is one\u00a0thing I can&#8217;t solve.\u00a0 I can&#8217;t get VNC to wake my machine up if the screen is locked.\u00a0 I run VNC and Hamachi on all my computers.\u00a0 The free version of RealVNC (my\u00a0favorite flavor) isn&#8217;t compatible with Vista.\u00a0 I tried Ultr@VNC and it worked until my password protected screen saver kicked in.\u00a0 Once that happens, there is no response from Vista.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t have hibernate turned on, but the screen password seems to kick the machine into a different video mode\u00a0that cuts the VNC connection.<\/p>\n<p>There are some huge positives in my short Vista experience.\u00a0 I love the Start menu.\u00a0 I click the Windows-Key and a letter or two of the program I want to start and Vista finds it.\u00a0 It does the same with documents.\u00a0 Actually, it works with anything.<\/p>\n<p>I do a lot of file renaming.\u00a0 F2 still does the trick, but Vista doesn&#8217;t automatically highlight the file extension.\u00a0 If I rename a file, the OS assumes I still want those last three letters to remain the same.\u00a0 It takes an extra click to highlight the extension to change it (which I rarely do).\u00a0 This is more efficient for me about 99.44% of the time.<\/p>\n<p>I use the Sidebar with a few widgets.\u00a0 I like the quick loading calendar that pops up with Windows-Space Bar.<\/p>\n<p>The snipping tool is great for quick screen captures.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The user directories are much better.\u00a0 Everything is in a folder called &#8220;users&#8221; instead of &#8220;documents and settings&#8221; (what a dumb name).\u00a0 All the &#8220;my&#8221; prefixes are gone too.\u00a0 Now it&#8217;s &#8220;Documents&#8221;, &#8220;Pictures&#8221; and &#8220;Videos&#8221; instead of &#8220;My Documents&#8221;, &#8220;My Pictures&#8221; and &#8220;My Videos&#8221;.\u00a0 Vista also included a &#8220;Downloads&#8221; folder.\u00a0 This is something I have manually created on all my computers for years.\u00a0 Where else would anyone store downloaded programs?\u00a0 Finally it is built in and pre-programmed to communicate with applications that download files.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;User Access Control&#8221; isn&#8217;t nearly as bad as the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.trustyetc.com\/trustyblog\/2007\/04\/08\/cancel-or-allow\/\">Apple commercial<\/a> would have you believe.\u00a0 I get beeped once a day at most.\u00a0 As I get my machine tweaked, I will hardly see it at all.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have eased into Vista over the last couple of months.\u00a0 I had too many critical programs on my old system to risk an upgrade.\u00a0 I\u00a0had my data backed up, but I could not\u00a0risk the chance\u00a0of some of my applications &hellip;
