height: 123px\" \/><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/education.zdnet.com\/?p=1280\">Christopher Dawson<\/a> has an educational technology management blog on the ZDNet site.\u00a0 In today&#8217;s post, he talks about how Microsoft is becoming less important as an operating system vendor.\u00a0 Christopher is using\u00a0Ubuntu in the lab in his school with great success and student interest.<\/p>\n<p>There is absolutely nothing wrong with using Ubuntu, OS X or anything other non-Windows OS in a school.\u00a0 Students should be given as much exposure to as many different technology tools as possible.\u00a0 But to place any other operating system on the same level as Microsoft&#8217;s OS just isn&#8217;t right.\u00a0 Here are yesterday&#8217;s stats from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.w3counter.com\/globalstats.php\">w3counter<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<table>\n<tr>\n<th colSpan=\"3\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.w3counter.com\/globalstats.php\">Operating Systems<\/a><\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>1<\/td>\n<td>Windows XP<\/td>\n<td>81.02%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>2<\/td>\n<td>Mac OS X<\/td>\n<td>4.46%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>3<\/td>\n<td>Windows Vista<\/td>\n<td>4.14%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>4<\/td>\n<td>Windows 2000<\/td>\n<td>3.81%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>5<\/td>\n<td>Linux<\/td>\n<td>1.70%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>6<\/td>\n<td>Windows 98<\/td>\n<td>1.27%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>7<\/td>\n<td>Windows 2003<\/td>\n<td>0.74%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>8<\/td>\n<td>Windows ME<\/td>\n<td>0.44%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>9<\/td>\n<td>Windows NT<\/td>\n<td>0.06%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>10<\/td>\n<td>Mac PowerPC<\/td>\n<td>0.03%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p>I&#8217;m not sure why OS X\u00a0isn&#8217;t broken down into the various versions (Cheetah, Jaguar, Panther, etc).\u00a0 Given the fact that all distributions of Linux put together have just edged out Windows 98, there probably isn&#8217;t a single distro that would be much more than a blip on the radar.<\/p>\n<p>If you put all the versions of Window together and look at all the data available on w3counter&#8217;s site, you get a chart like this:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.trustyetc.com\/trustyblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/10\/oschart.gif\" alt=\"oschart.gif\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At its current rate of decline, Microsoft will matter a lot less in about twenty years.\u00a0 There was one jump in the data that I plan to watch.\u00a0 OS X went from 3.79% on Oct 10, to 4.46% on Oct 20.\u00a0 I am interested\u00a0in seeing\u00a0where OS X is at the end of the month.<\/p>\n<p>I think all the OS talk is wasted wind.\u00a0 We should focus on teaching our students how to learn something new quickly and to manage information within any environment.\u00a0 In twenty years those skills will matter.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Christopher Dawson has an educational technology management blog on the ZDNet site.\u00a0 In today&#8217;s post, he talks about how Microsoft is becoming less important as an operating system vendor.\u00a0 Christopher is using\u00a0Ubuntu in the lab in his school with great &hellip;
