I have been waiting to get my hands on this release of Ubuntu.\u00a0 I got up this morning and went to the Ubuntu site.<\/p>\n

This Site is Temporarily Unavailable<\/em><\/p>\n

It was that way until the afternoon.\u00a0 At the rate my download is going, the 700 MB file should be ready tomorrow when I get up.\u00a0 I will install it tomorrow and have the weekend to mess around with it.\u00a0 Most people downloading it will probably do the same.\u00a0 In a month, all of us will still be using what we were using yesterday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

I have never understood all the bickering over operating systems.\u00a0 I remember a Slashdot article from last month\u00a0where someone\u00a0asked the only important question that should be asked.<\/p>\n

What does (another OS) do that (my OS) doesn’t do?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Fill those names in with whatever you like.\u00a0 The list of\u00a0features unique to one operating system is short.\u00a0<\/p>\n

I run them all.\u00a0 I have to have access to the same programs my students use and my online students can choose to run any operating system.\u00a0 Mainly they run Windows, but some run OS X.\u00a0 I have yet to have a student that uses Linux as a desktop OS either at home or at school.<\/p>\n

Just for the record, I have never\u00a0purchased an operating system.\u00a0 I use what comes on my computers.\u00a0 My main OS right now is Windows Vista.\u00a0 I run Home Premium on my desktop and Ultimate on my laptop.\u00a0 My MAC\u00a0has 10.4 and my iPod Touch runs some version of OS X.\u00a0 The rest of the family runs XP Pro.\u00a0 We all use IE as our main browser.\u00a0 All the machines have the free version of AVG anti-virus except for my machines.\u00a0 I don’t run anti-virus software on my personal machines.\u00a0 We don’t run anti-spyware software on any of our computers.<\/p>\n

We don’t have spyware and have never had a virus.\u00a0 I have been using a computer for twenty years and I have never had a virus.<\/p>\n

Here are most of the things we do on\u00a0the computers\u00a0in our house:<\/p>\n

  1. Browse web pages and read email<\/li>\n
  2. Create and\u00a0organize documents, spreadsheets and presentations<\/li>\n
  3. Create and query databases<\/li>\n
  4. Schedule work and family activities<\/li>\n
  5. Draw pictures<\/li>\n
  6. Manipulate photographs<\/li>\n
  7. Digitize and watch videos<\/li>\n
  8. Create and listen to audio files<\/li>\n
  9. Play games<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    I am back to the question that no one ever asks.\u00a0 What OS\u00a0can’t do these things?<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Until someone creates an\u00a0OS that has useful functionality that no other OS has, we will all probably continue to use what we have.\u00a0 That’s why the version of Ubuntu I’m downloading right now won’t change much.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
