{"id":66,"date":"2007-03-13T23:07:43","date_gmt":"2007-03-14T04:07:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.trustyetc.com\/trustyblog\/?p=66"},"modified":"2007-03-13T23:08:34","modified_gmt":"2007-03-14T04:08:34","slug":"no-magic-bullet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.trustyetc.com\/trustyblog\/2007\/03\/13\/no-magic-bullet\/","title":{"rendered":"No Magic Bullet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After reading <a href=\"http:\/\/johnrappold.org\/blog\/?p=63\">John\u2019s post<\/a> about <em>\u201cAn Inconvenient Truth\u201d<\/em>, I decided I should give it a viewing.\u00a0 I did this mostly for professional reasons.\u00a0 I\u2019m at a point in two of the courses I teach where we will be focusing on PowerPoint.\u00a0 I wanted to see how the Oscar winning presentation looked.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image65\" title=\"ChristmasMoon.jpg\" alt=\"ChristmasMoon.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.trustyetc.com\/trustyblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/03\/ChristmasMoon.jpg\" align=\"right\" \/>The first thing I noticed \u2013 no bullet points.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t that he chopped the bullets off the beginning of his lists.\u00a0 He had almost no lists of the type that would normally have bulleted items.\u00a0 Most of his lists were charted on graphs showing different trends.\u00a0 When he did have a list, it was usually something big, like the number of countries that have signed the Kyoto Treaty.\u00a0 These lists were long and the font size was intentionally almost too small to read.\u00a0 It was as if the text was being treated like a graphic showing the magnitude of the data.<\/p>\n<p>When there was text on the screen, it was usually a label for a graphic.\u00a0 The few times quotes were used, each word of the quote was \u201ctyped\u201d onto the screen slightly faster than he read the words.\u00a0 That was the one part of the presentation that could have been done better.<\/p>\n<p>At times the camera panned the picture on the screen.\u00a0 I think the camera was panning.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know if he was doing a \u201czoom\u201d effect.\u00a0 The edges of the screen were not always in view, so I couldn\u2019t tell how the image was moving.<\/p>\n<p>The black background was interesting.\u00a0 When a few words in white were on the vast sea of darkness, it really stood out.\u00a0 I have thought of doing presentations this way.\u00a0 It reminded me of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.trustyetc.com\/trustyblog\/?p=49\">Lessig style<\/a> I talked about a couple of weeks ago.<\/p>\n<p>There were some things that were out of place.\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure why he did the whole \u201changing chad\u201d bit.\u00a0 It had no place in this film.\u00a0 Also, are we expected to believe that the clips showing him working on the presentation were real?\u00a0 He didn\u2019t even have a mouse.\u00a0 Those animations were done by high-dollar animators that used a lot more than a track pad.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After reading John\u2019s post about \u201cAn Inconvenient Truth\u201d, I decided I should give it a viewing.\u00a0 I did this mostly for professional reasons.\u00a0 I\u2019m at a point in two of the courses I teach where we will be focusing on &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trustyetc.com\/trustyblog\/2007\/03\/13\/no-magic-bullet\/\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[336],"class_list":["post-66","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-edtech","tag-edtech"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.trustyetc.com\/trustyblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/66","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.trustyetc.com\/trustyblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.trustyetc.com\/trustyblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.trustyetc.com\/trustyblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.trustyetc.com\/trustyblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=66"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.trustyetc.com\/trustyblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/66\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.trustyetc.com\/trustyblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=66"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.trustyetc.com\/trustyblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=66"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.trustyetc.com\/trustyblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=66"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
