{"id":774,"date":"2008-12-01T22:45:22","date_gmt":"2008-12-02T03:45:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.trustyetc.com\/trustyblog\/?p=774"},"modified":"2008-12-01T22:47:58","modified_gmt":"2008-12-02T03:47:58","slug":"changegov-switches-to-creative-commons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.trustyetc.com\/trustyblog\/2008\/12\/01\/changegov-switches-to-creative-commons\/","title":{"rendered":"Change.GOV switches to Creative Commons"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Maybe the new president will bring some change to our copyright laws.\u00a0 It seems the first step was taken today as CHANGE.GOV&#8217;s copyright designation was changed from &#8220;all rights reserved&#8221; to <a href=\"http:\/\/change.gov\/about\/copyright_policy\/\" target=\"_blank\">Creative Commons Attribution<\/a> license.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"border: 1px solid black;\" title=\"Change dot GOV goes Creative Commons\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3189\/3076464584_c66b4faac0_o.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"617\" height=\"390\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It is a well known fact that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lessig.org\/blog\/2008\/02\/20_minutes_or_so_on_why_i_am_4.html\" target=\"_blank\">Lawence Lessig<\/a> is a supporter of Obama.\u00a0 Maybe Lessig has some influence on the new President.<\/p>\n<p>Works licensed under Creative Commons are more restricted than works in the public domain.\u00a0 There is some debate as to whether everything on CHANGE.GOV is by definition already in the public domain.\u00a0 By definition, works created by the federal government or agents of the federal government are automatically in the public domain.\u00a0 Obama is not officially the President, but all his content is on a site using a dot GOV domain.\u00a0 I tell my students that dot GOV web sites are federal government projects.\u00a0 That makes them in the public domain.<\/p>\n<p>I still think the Creative Commons designation is OK on the site.\u00a0 There are areas of the site which seek input from the general public.\u00a0 If someone who is not employed by the federal government were to post a significant creative work in a &#8220;comment&#8221; area, that post would be licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution license.<\/p>\n<p>Our copyright law definitely needs some change.\u00a0 Since 1998, no copyright protected work has gone into the public domain.\u00a0 We have ten more years before the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Copyright_Term_Extension_Act\" target=\"_blank\">Mickey Mouse Copyright Extension Act<\/a> expires.\u00a0 Hopefully, CHANGE.GOV will do more than add a Creative Commons logo to the site.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Maybe the new president will bring some change to our copyright laws.\u00a0 It seems the first step was taken today as CHANGE.GOV&#8217;s copyright designation was changed from &#8220;all rights reserved&#8221; to Creative Commons Attribution license.
