{"id":893,"date":"2009-07-06T18:21:49","date_gmt":"2009-07-06T23:21:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.trustyetc.com\/trustyblog\/?p=893"},"modified":"2009-07-06T18:21:49","modified_gmt":"2009-07-06T23:21:49","slug":"i-really-want-to-learn-microsoft-office","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.trustyetc.com\/trustyblog\/2009\/07\/06\/i-really-want-to-learn-microsoft-office\/","title":{"rendered":"I really want to learn Microsoft Office"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you have worked in educational professional development, at some point you have asked your audience this question.\u00a0 &#8220;What technology would you like to know more about?&#8221;\u00a0 I asked this question to my school district in the early 1990s.\u00a0 Microsoft had just come out with Office 3.0 (the first version) which contained Word 2, PowerPoint 3 and Excel 4.\u00a0 I think they averaged those numbers and gave it the version number three.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Word processors I have learned\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3545\/3695113055_3262f6da2b_o.png\" alt=\"In my career, here are the word processors I have learned to use.  I have never attended a training to learn how to use a word processor.\" width=\"601\" height=\"451\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For several years I repeated summer PD with my teachers and each year the same &#8220;technology&#8221; was requested.\u00a0 Most teachers were interested in learning more about Microsoft Office.\u00a0 Sometimes there would be a few teachers asking specifically for one application like Excel or PowerPoint, but it was always something to do with Office.<\/p>\n<p>Times have changed.\u00a0 The number one item I hear about now is the SmartBoard, but Office follows in a close second.\u00a0 If a school does not own SmartBoards and does not plan to buy them, Office is still number one.<\/p>\n<p>The funny thing is, I have never taken a class to learn any version of Office.\u00a0 I have read several books and used assorted online resources, but I have never sat in a class for the purpose of learning how to use Office.\u00a0 Yet, I have learned to use sixteen different word processors since my first job.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/education.ohio.gov\/GD\/Templates\/Pages\/ODE\/ODEDetail.aspx?page=3&amp;TopicRelationID=1707&amp;ContentID=1279&amp;Content=51505\" target=\"_blank\">technology standards<\/a> for the state of Ohio have an indicator which states all  ninth graders will:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Demonstrate proficiency in all productivity tools (e.g., word processing, spreadsheet, database, desktop publishing).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And these standards were adopted almost six years ago in 2003.<\/p>\n<p>I am using Office 2007 right now.\u00a0 Office 2010 will be out later this year.\u00a0 The freshmen I have in class this fall will still be using the old version.\u00a0 Long before they graduate and get jobs in schools, Office 2010 will be out and widely adopted.\u00a0 By the time they teach ten years, few people will still be using Office 2007.<\/p>\n<p>This is why a personal professional development plan is so important.\u00a0 If we do not keep up with the basic technologies on our own, we will never master the use of advanced technology tools which really are exciting to use in the classroom.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you have worked in educational professional development, at some point you have asked your audience this question.\u00a0 &#8220;What technology would you like to know more about?&#8221;\u00a0 I asked this question to my school district in the early 1990s.\u00a0 Microsoft &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trustyetc.com\/trustyblog\/2009\/07\/06\/i-really-want-to-learn-microsoft-office\/\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[336,109,145,147,131,146],"class_list":["post-893","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-edtech","tag-edtech","tag-excel","tag-microsoft","tag-pd","tag-powerpoint","tag-word"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.trustyetc.com\/trustyblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/893","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.trustyetc.com\/trustyblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.trustyetc.com\/trustyblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.trustyetc.com\/trustyblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.trustyetc.com\/trustyblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=893"}],"version-history":[{"count":6,"href":"https:\/\/www.trustyetc.com\/trustyblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/893\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":899,"href":"https:\/\/www.trustyetc.com\/trustyblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/893\/revisions\/899"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.trustyetc.com\/trustyblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=893"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.trustyetc.com\/trustyblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=893"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.trustyetc.com\/trustyblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=893"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
