{"id":900,"date":"2009-07-09T13:40:41","date_gmt":"2009-07-09T18:40:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.trustyetc.com\/trustyblog\/?p=900"},"modified":"2009-07-14T09:12:57","modified_gmt":"2009-07-14T14:12:57","slug":"feedreader3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.trustyetc.com\/trustyblog\/2009\/07\/09\/feedreader3\/","title":{"rendered":"FeedReader3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Like many other people, I use Google Reader as my main <a href=\"http:\/\/www.trustyetc.com\/trustyblog\/2007\/07\/21\/efficiency-tip-88-use-rss\/\" target=\"_blank\">RSS feed reader<\/a>.\u00a0 However, I like to keep my class feeds separate.\u00a0 For years I have used a free piece of software called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rssreader.com\" target=\"_blank\">RssReader<\/a>.\u00a0 This simple program keeps all my feeds in a stand-alone app with one big bonus.\u00a0 RssReader archives all edits.\u00a0 So if someone changes a post, the reader keeps track and shows all versions.\u00a0 This is super handy when using blogs with students.<\/p>\n<p>The main problem with RssReader is its age.\u00a0 It was last updated more than five years ago.\u00a0 As a result, it lacks some of the features of newer readers, plus I&#8217;m starting to get random errors with some of the blogs I read.<\/p>\n<p>I went looking for a new reader and found this list at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dmoz.org\/Computers\/Software\/Internet\/Clients\/WWW\/Feed_Readers\/Windows\/\" target=\"_blank\">Open Directory Project<\/a>.\u00a0 Specifically I was looking for a reader that could handle sorting by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.trustyetc.com\/trustyblog\/2007\/02\/02\/tagging-and-tag-clouds\/\" target=\"_blank\">tags<\/a>.\u00a0 I found <a href=\"http:\/\/www.feedreader.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">FeedReader3<\/a>.\u00a0 As you can see below, the feeds can be sorted by tag.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"FeedReader3\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3494\/3705012316_cc2106718d_o.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"819\" height=\"650\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When I give a blog assignment in class, I have the students add a very long and specific tag to each post.\u00a0 This does two things.<\/p>\n<p>1 &#8211; I can sort the posts in my reader by assignment.\u00a0 This makes grading much easier especially if there are several posts which are similar.\u00a0 I can tell which post goes with each assignment.<\/p>\n<p>2 &#8211; The students can find each other easier.\u00a0 Google picks up each post with its tags and a search of one of the tags will show all posts by all students.\u00a0 At some point I always have students consider the work of other students.\u00a0 These tags make it easy to see what everyone else is saying.<\/p>\n<p>So far FeedReader3 has worked well.\u00a0 It has an OPML import and export feature, so moving all my feeds into FeedReader3 or out to something else is snap.\u00a0 From what I see,\u00a0 I will probably stick with this one for a while.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Like many other people, I use Google Reader as my main RSS feed reader.\u00a0 However, I like to keep my class feeds separate.\u00a0 For years I have used a free piece of software called RssReader.\u00a0 This simple program keeps all &hellip;
