Efficiency Tip #67 – Turn Off Hibernate

In an earlier post I explained why never turning your computer off is better.  When you walk away from your computer, make sure hibernate is turned off.  To do this, go to the Control Panel – Power Options – Hibernate and ensure the Enable Hibernation box is NOT checked.

I have had too many problems with my computer not waking up properly after being in the hibernated state.  A better option (when you walk away from your computer) is to use Standby mode.  Do this by initiating a normal shutdown, but select Standby instead of Shutdown or Restart.  Your computer will wake up almost as fast and you won’t have the problems associated with hibernation.

We are new owners of an HP with Vista. Our son-in-law, John Schinker, turned us on to your site and now I am a faithful reader. My question is our ops menue has hibernate but also a sleep op. which they say is lower power for quick resume. Is this the same principal as the stand-by you suggest? Thanks!

Sleep is similar to standby. Here is a page on Microsoft’s web site that explains it fully. Look at:

    2) Save Power and Time with ‘Sleep’ Mode

The big difference in sleep and hibernate is that sleep actually leaves your computer on, but with minimal power usage. My computer will run from the battery for many days while in sleep mode. Hibernate saves everything running on the computer (even open documents) and then does a full shutdown. In addition to taking longer to restore a session, I have had problems with hibernate locking up my machine.

The above link recommends “sleep” over hibernate mode.
