Efficiency Tip #19 – Tab

Tab TabDuring the average day, how many times do you use a web based form? If you login to anything on the web, you see a dialog box like the one at the right. After typing in your username, do you use your mouse to navigate to the password box? Don’t ever do that again. Instead, press the Tab key one time. This will move the cursor from the current text box to the next text box.

This works for just any web based form. Pressing the Tab key multiple times will move you all the way through a form in no time at all.

One-to-one

One-to-One ProgramI first saw this article on Slashdot last week. It made it’s rounds through the blogs and even onto the eTech Tech Coordinator listserv. The buzz is all about schools with 1:1 student:laptop programs. In other words, every student in a grade level (sometimes in an entire building) has a laptop. Some states have state-wide initiatives where every student in the state gets a laptop.

Last night we went to an ice cream social at church. It was an end-of-the-year thing for one of the children’s programs. We have four different Sunday services, so there were a few people that I didn’t know. It was Wednesday; I had to talk to someone I didn’t know. I sat beside someone I knew was a teacher. I won’t go into it, but I can usually tell if someone is a teacher. I started the conversation with, “Where do you teach?” We were on our way. It didn’t take long for him to mention someone I know… his tech coordinator.

At this point I find out his school has a 1:1 program. They are finishing their first full year where every student in two grades has a laptop. They also plan to continue the program next year.

I still couldn’t tell if he thought the program was going well or not. Yesterday he had to confiscate two laptops because students were playing Halo during class.

I asked how he used the laptops in class. He said students use the Internet to research processes used in class. They also use software to plan and manage projects. He teaches a shop class and said he has an easier time than most teachers. There are times when his students must use shop equipment and do not need the laptops. During those times all laptops are required to be in book bags. He said other teachers don’t have that luxury. In most classes the laptops are out all the time. It can be difficult to tell if a student is working or playing.

On the plus side, he said students don’t carry huge book bags around. All the text books are online and can be accessed from home or school.

Efficiency Tip #18 – Ctrl-N

Ctrl-NMany times I am at a point in my browser where I need a new page, but I can’t leave the current page. It happened just now. I was using a web-based email program and I needed to go to another web page to check something. There was nothing I could right-click and Open In New Window. I needed to go to another page, but I was half way through writing a message that I didn’t want to lose.

I pressed Ctrl-N. That started a new browser window. I retrieved my information and closed the new window. It put me right back into my email program.

Efficiency Tip #17 – Alt-Arrow

ArrowsAnother quick way to move back and forth in your browser is to use the Alt-Arrow keys. Alt-Left-Arrow will take your browser back to the previous page while Alt-Right-Arrow will move to the next page in your browser’s history.

Our lab tests show it is actually quicker to let go of the mouse, use the Alt-Left keys and then go back to the mouse. In this way, the cursor never moves. Often the location of the cursor is important and moving up to the tool bar and back onto the browser page can waste valuable time.

If you are tied to the mouse, try a right-click and select Back from the drop-down menu.
